Together with Carol Paton and Dr Stephen Pereira, he worked to set up the National Association of Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (NAPICU) and, amid growing concerns over the poor conditions on many locked wards, conducted the first nationwide survey of PICUs. This involved sending out 397 questionnaires, which gathered information on admission criteria, male-to-female patient ratios, medical staffing and written policies at 110 PICU units.
